Harbour City by Night table-top game - players wanted

Postby Canberra_GM on Fri Jul 16, 2010 11:30 pm

HI all

I'm new in town. I'm hoping to run a game. Details are below, as are contact instructions for players.

Harbour City by Night - brief overview

Harbour City by Night is a World of Darkness game; that is, there are ‘things that go bump in the night’ – vampires, magic, monsters, and the other usual suspects of the supernatural; the world isn’t a pleasant place, but neither is it impossible to carve yourself a niche.

Game Setting: Harbour City is an alternative Sydney, Australia – just a universe or two over from the one we experience today. There is a big difference… the world most people know is just a sugar-coated topping. There is another world, beneath it; the World of Darkness. In Harbour City by Night, the characters (PCs) have all been newly created vampires, freshly inducted into the violent, dark and mysterious night.

Game Themes:
Character Level – finding your way in the world; taking the hand dealt to you and doing your best; carving a niche for yourself in the face of opposition
Setting Level – Order vs. Freedom; “A Shadow of a Threat”; Enforced Change

Game System: The game will use the old Storyteller system with a few extras from the Spirit-of-the-Century game. Basically, the emphasis is on telling a good story, and only using the dice to decide doubtful issues. You could be completely new to both and still pick up the general idea in a few minutes.

Storyteller / GM: I’m notoriously shy when it comes to speaking about myself. In a nutshell my educational background is in philosophy, law, geopolitics, history, education & economics. I’ve traveled through Europe and Australia. I’m straight, but un-married, have no kids, and love playing RPGs. I'm younger than my age, in apperance and outlook. I think there’s a good story to tell in the Harbour City by Night setting. If people have a good idea for a story they are welcome to step into the hot-seat and GM for a while. I’d like to see a rotating GM’s chair for I too like to play, but it makes sense for me to run the first few game sessions to get everyone into the groove.

Game Theory
I’m a pretty informal type of guy and a fan of the share-the-food, share-the-drink, share-the-story school of gaming. I like to see well developed character backgrounds and play-by-email downtimes. I enjoy blending the elements introduced by players into the story as much as possible. If possible, I’d like to run through brief one-on-one sessions with each player to bring their character into the world of Harbour City by Night.

When do we get to play?
I’d like to game regularly, once a week or once a fortnight. Not all players need to be present at all games so if people will regularly miss a game, then that is fine.

Game Historical Background
Harbour City was established as an English penal colony over two hundred ago, growing to become a thriving city. The nation of Australia came into being pretty much as we know it today. There have been minor differences owing to the more prevalent nature of the supernatural, but just as water finds its level, so too has history followed a common path.

What the Characters Know… will be revealed to players. :-)

Those keen should let me know via this portal or via PM.

Hi Canberra-GM. Please accept this belated welcome to Meetup!

The system you are proposing for your game sounds interesting - a mix of Old WoD Storytelling and FATE 3.0! I'd be interested in knowing how you find it when your game gets underway!

Also, I just wanted to say that I know how hard it is to kick off a game when you are new. Unless you are proposing to run a popular system, like virtually any edition of D&D, it is hard to get players as you are largely an unknown quality. In addition, there appears to be a greater demand for players than games these days, but that will hopefully change as more people join RPGMeetup.

I recommend that you attend Meetups and Beerups, and get to know folks (and allow them to get to know you). I know this is a difficult task if you consider yourself to be a shy person, but I think that it is well worth the effort - what have you got to lose? I note that you have already enquired about Beerup, which is usually a good opportunity to get to know folks, as is Meetup, which is less frequent. It is a good idea to attend both Beerup and Meetup at least a few times, as not all "the regulars" attend both, and attendance for both can be sporadic.

In addition, if you want to get to know folks quicker, I recommend jumping into any free spots in any games that take your fancy right now.
Games I run: Werewolf: the Forsaken [Solar System], BSG: All Along The Watchtower [HQ2], Aberrant: Teen Tomorrow [WT]
Games I ran/played: Mouse Guard Limited Series [Mouse Guard],
Nephilim: Within the Great Mechanism [HQ2]
Settings I want to run one day: Old/New World of Darkness, Aeon Trinity, Adventure!, War Against the Chtorr, Star Wars... and more besides!

Makes sense. For the record, I'd much rather play than GM.

So who's looking for a player?

You should definitely meet people via Beerup or Meetup.

As for games looking for players, look over at this forum; viewforum.php?f=3

PLEASE do not send me direct messages, use e-mail instead, or simply comment on the appropriate thread.

"Nice. [giggle, twitch]" -- myself
"you have the worst quote on the rpg meetup forum" -- bela farkas
